Your dream of flying starts here
We have been training sport pilots at Weimar Airfield since 1990. Modern ultralight aircraft, experienced instructors, honest pricing – and the sky over Thuringia as your classroom.
Why ultralight flying?
Ultralight flying is the most accessible route into aviation: modern, safe aircraft with a ballistic recovery system, quiet (below 60 dB) and economical. With the sport pilot licence (SPL) you fly two-seat ultralights up to 472.5 kg take-off mass – from an after-work flight over Thuringia to group trips to the Baltic Sea or Lake Balaton.
Want more later? The ultralight licence can be extended to a private pilot licence (PPL) for single-engine aircraft.
Am I suited to it?
The short answer: very probably yes. Learning to fly is not a privilege for the few.
Health
Normal everyday health is sufficient – the aviation medical is no obstacle for healthy people. Glasses are no problem either.
Age & prior knowledge
Start at 16, licence at 17 – with no upper limit; many start at 40, 50 or later. No technical background needed – we teach you everything.
Time & pace
You fly at your own pace and pay per hour – not up front for a package. Fly regularly and you progress quickly; take breaks whenever you need.
Not sure? That is exactly what the trial flight is for: experience first, decide afterwards.
How your training works
1 · Theory
60 lessons in group or individual tuition: technology & aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, air law, emergency procedures and human performance.
2 · Practice
Flight hours with an instructor on the Ikarus C42: handling, navigation, take-offs and landings – all the way to your confident solo flight. 30 hours is the legal minimum; how many you need depends on talent and practice rhythm – usually it is more.
3 · Exam & licence
Theory and practical exams at the airfield. Afterwards: licence in hand – 12 flight hours per 24 months keep it current.
Services & prices
Honest per-service prices – billed by engine running time (Hobbs time): the meter runs from engine start to shutdown. We deliberately promise no total price; how many flight hours you need is individual.
